NZ GST changes with your OTA's

As part of these regulations, each Online Travel Agency (OTA) will be required to collect and remit 15% GST on all listed short-stay and visitor accommodations to the New Zealand Inland Revenue Department (IRD).

For non-individual entities that are GST registered and anticipate making more than $500,000NZD of taxable supplies within a 12-month period, you will need to opt out of the marketplace rules and continue accounting for GST as usual.

Below, we have provided information and instructions to help you opt out of GST for each OTA:

Airbnb
Please refer to the article here they have published for detailed instructions. Ensure your GST registration number is updated on your Airbnb extranet and contact the community support team to opt out if you meet the eligibility criteria.

Booking.com
Review the article here they have published regarding the new rules. Ensure your GST registration status and marketplace rules opt-out status are up to date on the extranet. Additionally, provide your IRD number as instructed. Whether or not you’re registered for GST, we’re also required to collect your IRD number (tax file number). Please provide us with this in the extranet and also check that your GST registration status is up to date. Here’s how:

  1. Sign in to the extranet
  2. Click on Finance and then click on Finance settings
  3. In the General finance section, click on Goods and services tax
  4. Click on Edit details
  5. Check your GST registration status and marketplace rules opt-out status, and update them if needed
  6. Enter or update your IRD number
  7. Click on Save

VRBO / Expedia
If you meet the opt-out eligibility criteria and agree to opt out, no further action is required. Ensure your VAT ID is updated or entered in your account as per the provided instructions. Add or edit your Value-Added Tax (VAT) ID

Follow the steps to enter or update your VAT ID in your account to exempt you from paying VAT on services provided by Vrbo.

  1. Sign into your account
  2. Select My Account
  3. In the menu, select Account Settings
  4. In the Tax identification section, select Yes for Do you have a VAT ID?
  5. Enter the VAT ID
  6. Select Save
